hoochie dress

i don't know about you, but to me the word hoochie has always been hilarious.  it just seems like the perfect non-dirty word to describe an array of things... like this dress.  as with most forever 21 "dresses" - and i use that word very loosely - it barely covers the belly button, much less the unmentionables.  good thing beca got me these awesome pants...

dress: forever 21 // pants: old navy, gift from beca // necklace: vintage // shoes: kork-ease via ebay

do you have trouble with dresses being entirely too short?  i'm only 5'2" and i often feel like i need to layer a longer dress underneath just to cover up, so i can't imagine how frustrating it must be for people of average height!

  1. I like the pattern - very Cath Kidston.

I find that dresses are either too short (I'm a UK Size 16 so I'm wide and short lol) or too long. If the waist band is in the wrong place I look like a ball.

I think it's an empire line that I like (where the waist is above your tummy/under your chest) so that the fabric covers my tummy

  2. I have this problem with A LOT of dresses these days. I always assume its because I have a "long torso" or whatever so they don't sit on the right part of my waist or some such but recently I bought a dress specifically made for "tall" people and I still had this problem. In fact, its shorter than a dress in the same style for not tall people. GAH! Its the bane of my life! And of course I never notice it until I try and wear the dress in a not in the changing rooms kind of scenario so I'm all OMG THIS DRESS IS PERFECT buy it, then sob into it later when I realise I can never wear it. ever. again. Until I too recently embraced the very early 2000's nack of wearing a dress over jeans - its coming back, its awesome, we rock it...

  3. i am 5'7 and i laugh so hard whenever i look online and see the model info on f21. most of their models are 5'10+ and wear a small and it covers them pretty nicely. then i got my version in the mail, and the difference is shocking. apparently my torso is super long or something....

  5. Yay!!! I live that you wore the jeans! Also, this outfit is my favorite because I wear somethin g almost identical everyday. I have to wear pants under most dresses because they are always obscene.
    also.....
    Hoochie mama. Hahahha.

  6. I'm 5'10" and most F21 dresses don't even cover my entire butt. I really don't like this whole mini dress fad thing. I pretty much do the same thing as you do, pants, leggings, and tights are kind of necessary!

  7. Yes, completely. while to most people summer is dress weather, my season for dress wearing is Fall and Winter because I can throw on some sweater tights with them. You look adorable:)

  8. Thank you for making me laugh! I agree that most of the "dresses" at Forever 21 don't really qualify as dresses. I think dresses in general are getting shorter, which is disappointing, because I don't want to show the world that much of my thighs.

Also it makes me chuckle when I'm reading a fashion magazine and they show a few pages of "work appropriate" outfits, and all of the outfits contain dresses or skirts that stop mid-thigh. No, that's not work appropriate, Glamour magazine.

  9. Ugh. YES. I am very comfortable with my body, but with my 5'9" frame it's incredibly difficult to find dresses and skirts that don't show my naughty bits every time I sit down or bend over ... ridiculous.

  10. Yeah I hear that. I am only 5 feet maybe 1 inch? and I am the same. Its mostly to work though... hanging around on the weekends I do not care that much.. but you are right about F21 they are there own bread...

  11. I love using the word hoochie but I use it kinda differently...I think it's a SoCal thing to use it like I do. But I love that you turned that shorty into a tunic-looking doodly thing. I love it. Those pants are a perfect color too (I have some just like it!) & yep, this outfit is pretty much perfect. Good job rockin that (very not hoochie mama) look. ;)

  12. As a side note I feel like I need to say wtf is up with forever 21 in general. I recently got a bunch of super cute tops from there that went wrong the first time in the wash and I can never wear again. UPSETTING. end of rant.

  13. YES. at 5'9 everything is short... and now that short is 'in' my sisters and i all struggle.... though i'm sure my university aged sister doesn't mind as much. i just use them as long shirts... no point in even pretending their dresses for me!

but dynamite pants - straight up kickin' (props beca!)

  14. yes i feel like a lot of stuff is a bit to short but wearing tights or shorts underneath makes it so much better for me. especially while riding. there are something though that i just can't wear while riding. i love the dress and the pants, becca is so sweet!

  15. Yes! I'm only 5'4" and I feel like so many dresses are too short- especially as I get older... I love how you styled this with the bright denim and I'm super jealous of your shoes! Hoochie is a funny word- you are right :)

  16. So cute! I'm 5'3" and have that issue as well. However, I'd hesitate to call this a "hoochie" dress because there isn't a lot of boob showing. So, rectify that next time. wink wink
