Art you need.

What's hanging on your walls right now?  UNLESS YOU SAY ICEFLOE PHOTOGRAPHY, FORGET IT!  I was hoping to convey a threatening tone; do you think it worked?  Anyway, I'm a huge fan of Dianne Tanner's photography and the soft, dreamy quality of her subjects captured on film.  Some of my favorites include...

I'm lucky enough to have this one and this one grace my walls, and I'm thinking I'm really going to need to go ahead and add the Skullz print to my collection.

from film with love

it's been way too long since i've done a 'from film with love post' so i couldn't wait to get back some film pictures from the beach to use for this post!  we took four cameras - two of them film - so we aren't lacking pictures!  my favorite camera, hands-down, is my old (super old) olympus pen-ee half frame camera, so that's always the one i reach for when i go somewhere pretty!

no matter how expensive film processing may be, how difficult it may become to find places that process film, or how obsolete film and film cameras may become, to me, digital will never have the same novelty and surprise that film does!  do you use film cameras?  what kind(s) do you use?  and do you develop the film yourself?

shopping spree day

well, last saturday was it - the day i'd been looking forward to for several weeks - shopping spree day. and believe it or not, it was chris's idea! the mission: find clothes that fit in stores we don't have around here, so i'll stop whining about things being too big. we headed south to raleigh, nc and shopped until we felt like we'd collapse. after shopping we wanted to go downtown since it's so pretty... and free. we used one of our film cameras, and i just got the pictures developed yesterday!

there seemed to be a whole lot of horses downtown on saturday, which i don't remember seeing other times i've been, but i love horses, so it was definitely a treat! we spent most of our time around the capitol building as the flowers a so colorful, the sidewalks are shaded, there are lots of birds, and the nearby architecture is so pretty. i think my favorite thing from our time downtown was walking up on these little sparrows in the 7th picture that would sort of hover by this one monument, and although you can't see it as well in the picture i've added since i had to resize it, the bird that had just flown off has it's wings sort of spread and curved so in the picture you can see each little feather! i think my heart exploded. i'll be sure to show you what all i bought later this week!

from film with love. and then a rant.

the other week i posted some black and white film pictures that i'd scanned in, but since i couldn't decide on just four or five, i knew i'd need to split them up so as not to give you photo overload! also, things have been, well, crazy to say the least, so i haven't had a spare minute to look at any other pictures or even think of what else i should blog about.

i love the look of black and white pictures, but if i'm being completely honest, i'm not a huge fan of using black and white film. i guess if i'm going to use film, i want to see the soft colors, the variation in colors from light leaks, etc. oh, and it probably goes without saying, black and white is quite a bit more expensive to have developed that color film is!

i feel like i need to just get things off my chest now. i know that what's going on in my life has no bearing on many of the readers, but since a blog is a journal of sorts, it's a good place to just spill, right?

first, i'm still upset about helen passing away. about two hours after her funeral was over we had to get to a wedding rehearsal and it was difficult to hold it all together when i really just wanted to cry. i feel like so much has been going on lately that chris and i haven't been able to properly mourn. it saddens me to think that we'll no longer have a conversation about mockingbirds (her telling me they're too cross, me telling her she's wrong and they're amazing), her telling me she knew it was me before she saw me because of the sound of my walk, giving her a hair cut even though i told her i was too nervous to do it, and so many other things.

second, chris and i went to court this morning hoping to have a final judgement on the tens of thousands of dollars of backpay chris's former employer withheld. i should say i was surprised to find that wayne and his lawyer made a calculated move to file for bankruptcy on friday, but i guess i'm not. why is it that people with no moral compass always seem to get by and screw everyone else? what in the world could chris and i have done that was so bad we deserve this? try as i might, i cannot understand the workings of a corrupt mind. i want to choke wayne until he begs me to stop, i want to harass him until his only option is to pay up and skip town, i want to make him face some sort of consequence for his impropriety, but unfortunately i can't. several years ago when chris and i were on the way home from one of his motocross races, we were driving through a backwoods town in west virginia when we saw a sign that read, "bobby ray is a liar, a cheat and a thief." i laughed at the time, but now i wouldn't mind making my own to drive into the ground in front of his office that reads, "wayne hardison is a liar, a thief and a coward. do not trust this man." but my conscience stops me. i don't bring religion into my blog as i don't know others beliefs, and i've never liked those that push things on you, but to try and keep my anger and appetite for vengeance in check, i keep repeating to myself, "dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place to wrath: for it is written, vengeance is mine; I will repay, said the Lord." i sure hope vengeance will be served.

now i guess the ranting is over. i'm still going to be fuming mad for who knows how long, but i plan to eat a big philly cheesesteak dripping with pepper juice and lay on the sofa watching school of rock so at least i'll get some joy out of the day. i hope you had a good weekend!

i spent part of this morning scanning in pictures i recently had developed from a roll of black and white film. the roll of film was from my college days, so it was obviously very expired. i was excited to find it nonetheless, and even more curious about how the pictures would turn out given its age. i'm breaking the pictures into two groups so you don't get photo overload, so i'd say i was pleased with the results! i only wish i could have processed and printed them in the darkroom myself!

a while back, and i'm talking the end of last year or beginning of this year, i mentioned something about how i wanted to get a "brain goldfish." the fishie at the top was my brain goldfish named cadillac. sadly, he didn't live very long, and staying true to myself, i'm late showing you a picture of him. on to happier things, i think my favorite picture from the entire roll is the third one down of kona's profile. i remember my first semester of black and white photography, the professor said to go ahead and get the pet pictures out of the way so that we could focus on other things later. i love looking at pictures of architecture, candid pictures of people, landscapes, etc., but sometimes i have a hard time even thinking to take pictures of other things because flojo and kona are among the most important and cherished things in my life, and i'll never develop a roll of film that doesn't include them!

last friday i took three rolls of film to be developed (but since two rolls were black and white, i have to wait a few more days before that's ready) and one was from my olympus pen ee half frame camera. even though i've had this camera for a little while now, i'm always most excited about pictures that come from it more so than other film cameras. the first one is actually three exposures, and i love the way it turned out, but i bet i couldn't do it again if i tried! i didn't realize just how long i'd had this particular roll of film in my camera, but the pictures of chris and i on the bikes (side note, i totally beat him at the "who can ride the longest with no hands" competition) is from the beginning of june, and the ones from d.c. are from a couple weeks ago when chris and i went for his birthday.

in the next to last picture with the blue and black blur, well, i'm not really sure what that is. i'm always worried that i'll accidentally get a picture of the inside of my bag, so there's a good chance that's a blur of my crack pipe you're looking at there. i kid, i kid! have you been using and film cameras or had any pictures developed lately? have a link to them?

i swear i don't feel like i do, and i must not realize it, but i think i must talk about birds and flojo a lot. it seems like the first bit of concrete information people have about me is that i like birds, and if you're not a bird fan, please forgive me, for i know not the time i spend discussing my fine feathered friends. BUT, since we all know that i tend to gravitate toward all things avian, let's just go ahead and talk birds even MORE, and more specifically, FLOJO! i have a stack of pictures that i got developed a couple months ago, but i either haven't remembered to scan them in or i've been busy doing something else, although half the time i'm not sure what that something else is. behold, my beautiful baby (and some flowers too since i think i have a handful of other interests)...

and the deets in case you're wondering, i use 35mm film. and i'm a total film snob; i will fuss and cry and throw a fit if i have to use anything other than kodak.

wow, this weekend has come and pretty much gone like a blur. i think i've been so pre-occupied with the thought of life and its fragility to really pay the last couple days any attention. on friday afternoon chris called me after he learned that his second cousin and her husband were killed when their apartment and about 10 others were destroyed in a fire. she was only 26 years old. i will never understand tragedy, and i can't understand death. it sort of puts things into perspective, and not that i didn't appreciate what, and more importantly, WHO i have in my life, but this really made me think about it all. their passing scares and saddens me, and that fear makes me want to take more risks, enjoy each minute, and stop worrying about things i can't change. i didn't mean to make this a preachy post, but life, and death, really scare me sometimes. as some of you know, chris is going through a battle of sorts for back pay. i've realized that having a fat bank account really isn't that big a deal; enjoying our time is. so once things are settled on that front, we're traveling, whether he likes it not! one place i want to take him is pebble beach, which still holds a piece of my heart...

on a lighter note, my pop is hilarious, and i used to always tell him that he should've been a comedian. i think i get my never serious and always making a joke attitude from him, and i'm grateful for that! anyway, yesterday was his birthday, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, POP!!!!!, so when i talked to him today and asked him what all he did, he told me that he and tricia, my stepmom, went to charlottesville to eat. here's the funny part, he said that he was hungry for mexican, pizza, a cheeseburger and fried chicken. so they went somewhere that had everything but the mexican and for dinner he devoured: three pieces of fried chicken, one cheeseburger, one piece of pizza and two servings of corn. seriously, you'd think he was as big as a house, but he isn't! he's nuts.

how was your weekend?

from film, with love.

because i love film so much, and i love sharing and seeing film pictures, i've decided to try and post a few film pictures maybe once a week. i had two rolls of film from two different cameras developed on thursday, and i knew i was in for a surprise. one of the rolls was taken last august when i was in san francisco and carmel, ca, but since i have six rolls of film from that trip, i don't know what's what! the other roll i took with my vintage olympus pen ee half frame camera, and i'm still really learning on that one. i have so much fun with it, and it's always so exciting getting those pictures developed!

the third picture is my favorite. i love how from frame to frame the colors and light leaks can change! ahhhh, i'm smitten with film. do you have any film pictures on your blog or flickr? i finally brought my flickr page back to life and hope to add mostly film pictures.

from film, with love.

i've told you several times now about my vintage half frame camera (an olympus pen ee) and i finally scanned in some pictures today! these are from my first roll, and as with any new camera (since i'm not a professional), there's sort of a time in the beginning when it's all new and you really have no idea what you're doing or what the outcome will be. there is a little bit of a light leak (which i've fixed for the roll of film that's currently in there) that was visible on some pictures but not others, but overall, i'm happy! i mean, come on, i get 48 pictures from a 24 exposure roll, what's not to like?!

one little note about my camera, i first found out about them from a post kjrsten did with some of her amazing photography, and i instantly knew i HAD to have one, there was no way to keep living without it. i found mine on ebay and i've been taking pictures with it nonstop since i got it!
