hermit crabs roam the streets

because of all the glorious ragweed that so plentifully grows in the fields around my house, my allergies have been out of control, and all the stuffiness has made the quality of my sleep complete crap. i've been so tired the last few days, and apparently that has started to affect my sanity. you know how when you're really tired you think crazy things, and how you can think the most off the wall thing for just a split second and realize how insane it was? well today when i was on the way back to the office from meeting a client, i swear, for just half a millisecond, i thought i saw a hermit crab in the road. of course, there are not hermit crabs running wild in virginia, and as it turns out, the hermit crab was a leaf in the road. as quickly as the thought entered my mind, i told myself i was losing it. tonight, i have to sleep better!

speaking of hermit crabs, did you ever have one when you were younger? my brother and i each had a huge crab, and we loved them until they turned on us. staging a hermit crab revolt, my brother's crab clamped down on his palm and wouldn't let go until it had taken a hunk of flesh. then not 12 hours later, my hermit crab latched onto that sensitive piece of flesh between the thumb and index finger. i shook and shook and shook, and finally the thing flew off. i guess it goes without saying that we didn't play with our hermit crabs anymore after that. little jerks.

i'll try to blog tomorrow, but if i don't, i'll see you in a little over a week when chris and i return from our deserted island anniversary trip!

  1. This post scared me ... only because when I was ten I was attacked by a hermit crab in a pet store. No joke he would not let go of my hand ... the fire department had to come!! HA! It is a funny story now! Hugs lady! xo

  2. because of this picture, i may have reconsidered not wanting to touch them at work ha! you're so funny. I never had one but my childhood best friend's younger sister had one and it died while she was somewhere with her parents. She was attached to this thing so we figured she'd want to say goodbye to it and yet we didn't know what else to do (we didn't want to leave it in the crabitat so we put it in the freezer. LOL i forgot about that memory...

You and Chris have SOOOO MUCH fun on your anniversary getaway. Cheers to you both! and here's to love :) yup, i'm getting all sappy on you. xo

  3. Well, only in painted form. They died quickly. They were my nieces. It was quite traumatic. I read up about it and discovered how wrong it is to buy those painted crabs, it's cruel. I guess it kind of was obvious, but sponge bob painted crabs are irresistible to children.

  4. I know what you mean by the ragweed! it has my head all in a fog too. I look like a zombie walking around, trying to keep my thoughts together. I love fall, but not the ragweed.

  5. oh dear! i totally understand the allergies. i literally took a 3 hour nap yesterday and went to bed at 8:45. i'm just lucky i have the time to sleep when i need it! of course these afternoon sleeps make me dream and when i wake up i have a hard time figuring out if it was a dream or reality.... why must green growing things affect us so??

  6. My dad lived in Mississippi when I was a kid and my sister and I would spend an entire day (well, all day, every day, to be exact) collecting every hermit crab we could out of the water and building elaborate castles for them. "Habitats," really. By the end of the day we'd be sunburnt and the 100+ hermit crabs would be engaged in many interpersonal battles for superior shells, the tide lapping at the walls of our structures that had been built too far out on the intertidal zone. I always sort of felt bad for little ones that had way too big of a shell after all of the house-swapping, or a big one that had been made homeless by the shenanigans of other hermit crabs. We always threw them back, though I'm sure we caught a couple more than once. We were pretty thorough.

  9. ha!

one time my mom saw a white towel in the road at night and thought it was a cow. we even stopped for it, but it was totally a towel. we still tease her about it.

and i love caroline's hermit crab story. so hillarious, although probably not so much at the time.

    xo!

  10. You seriously crack me up. I seriously had never heard of violent hermit crabs until this post. We used to go to Ocean City, MD every summer and BEG my mom for one. Luckily, she never said yes.

  12. haha, once i was walking at night and i looked down and thought i was about to step on a frog. i almost fell over avoiding it...and it was a leaf. those tricky leaves...masquerading as frogs and hermit crabs.

  13. One more thing. I also have this happen to me (no sleep = crazy). Once in a public washroom the draft from the door made a napkin on the ground float toward me. For a split second, I gasped and thought it was a severed hand crawling to me (like on the adams family). I'm pretty sure that kind of thing exists nowhere, so your crab vision isn't so bad! lol.
